Alpena Sports Hall of Fame announces 2014 nominees

The Alpena Sports Hall of Fame announces its nominees for the 2014 class. Three nominees will be chosen on the association ballot and one will be selected by the senior committee. The four inductees will be announced in January and inducted at the annual Hall of Fame banquet in May.

KEN BAUER

(AHS 1978)

Awarded five letters playing baseball (3) and basketball for Alpena High School…In independent baseball he was a star on 10 championship teams…In Alpena Little League Minor Division he was a star pitcher and hitter, winning two team titles and leading his Major Division Volunteers to three first-place finishes…In Babe Ruth (13-15) he was a three-time All-Star and shortstop hitting about .414 and winning three championships…In Babe Ruth Senior Division he was a three-time All-Star…Captain of the Alpena High baseball team…Won the Don Damoth Award as MVP and committed only one error for the entire season at shortstop…Two-year starter for the Alpena basketball team where he averaged nearly 10 points a game…Played independent baseball for the Harvest Table in 1981, he was awarded the Jim Wiley MVP award, hitting .371 with a 5-0 pitching record and a 1.15 ERA.

MELISSA BROUSSEAU (O’DELL) (AHS, 1997)

Awarded seven letters at Alpena High School after excelling in track and basketball…earned academic all-state honors in 1997…earned all-state honors twice in both shot put and discus and holds Alpena’s records in both events…won the shot put at the Best of the Best Midwest Meet of Champions after high school…attended Central Michigan and was a three-time Mid American Conference champion in the shot put…NCAA qualifier in 2002…won four indoor MAC honors and two indoor MAC honors…named CMU’s most improved athlete in 1999…National junior qualifier in 1998.

DICK DENNIS (ROCKFORD HIGH SCHOOL 1949

Renowed Alpena High School basketball coach from 1957-67…Coached basketball and track…Seven varsity basketball teams went 105-21, including 94-14 in the regular season…His 1961-62 team was undefeated in the regular season, then lost to top-ranked Saginaw in tournament play…His 1964-65 and 1965-66 teams recorded one loss each year.

JACK DISCHER

(Fargo Central High School, N D 1962)

Had tremendous success as coach of the Alpena High gymnastics program from 1967-1977…Won a state title in 1977…Named Detroit News All-State Coach of the Year in 1976…Named Gymastics Coach of the Year in Michigan in 1976 and 1977… His 1977 team set a state record for points scored (140.9)…Served as a mentor and coach to many of Alpena’s great gymnasts including John Geddert, Kurt Golder and Howard Welsh…Honored as North Dakota girls gymnastics Coach of the Year in 1980.

SHANNON

DOMRASE (WOLOSZYK)

(AHS, 1993)

Played Huron Shore Softball from 1984-1989 and was selected as an All-Star from 1986-1989…Earned three varsity letters in softball and became Alpena’s starting catcher as a sophomore…named team MVP as a junior and won the Coaches Award as a senior…played softball at Alma College and became the team’s starting catcher as a sophomore.

RACHAEL GEBAUER

(AHS, 2008)

Earned 15 letters at Alpena High School, including four each in track, basketball and softball…Earned all-state honors in softball and basketball in 2008…One of six pitchers to win 40+ games for Alpena and hold several Alpena softball records…attended the Air Force Academy and earned seven letters while competing in numerous track and field events.

RYAN KRUEGER (AHS 1998)

Earned nine letters at Alpena High School, three each in baseball, soccer and hockey…won two state championships playing Babe Ruth Baseball…all-conference honors in hockey in 1996-97, Alpena’s Offensive Player of the Year and all-state honorable mention…1996 Alpena Pitcher of the Year…1997 MVP and Most Valuable Offensive Player for baseball along with all-district, all-region and all-state honors…1998 MHSAA Scholar Athlete Award…1996 all-conference in soccer…played for Flint Halo-Foutch team that won the AABC National Championship…played baseball for Central Michigan and won MAC Conference Player of the Week award twice…In 2003 he was all-MAC academic first team…team MVP and a team captain.

GREGG MATTISON (AHS 1957)

Won four state championships competing for the Wildcats…Won AAU all-around title competing in flying rings, still rings, floor exercise, high bar and uneven bars…Considered to be one of Alpena’s top gymnasts of all-time.

BRUCE MISCHLEY (AHS 1980)

Earned six letters at Alpena High, competing in baseball, basketball and football…In Alpena Little League Minor Division, he was a star pitcher and hitter, helping his team win two titles…In Major Division (10-12) he led his team to three championships, hit .621 and was a three-time all-star…In Babe Ruth baseball (13-15), his teams won three championships, he batted .624 and was an undefeated pitcher and led his teams to two state championships…In Senior Babe Ruth (16-18), his teams won three more titles…Also pitched for the Alpena Merchants…For Alpena High, he was a leading hitter and pitcher and starred on the 1980 team that won 18 games in a row…Starred as a defensive back on the 1979-80 teams that went 8-1 each season…Played baseball at Saginaw Valley.

WES ROCKETT (ALCONA HIGH SCHOOL,1981)

Competed as a boxer on several levels…won the state title boxing in the 14-15 year-old bracket at 125 lbs in 1977…Fighting as a light middle-weight, he was named boxer of the year and won the Julius Piazza Award as best amateur boxer…Ended his amateur career with a 22-2 record…After turning pro, he made his debut in 1981 in Alpena and competed in four pro fights, winning three…Eventually moved to Colorado where he went 3-0 in non-sanctioned three-man fights…earned Class C all-state honors in football at Alcona as a senior.

BOB SKUSE (Harrisville High School 1957)

Avid hunter who has spent his life in the woods, hunting and learning…His North American hunts include places like: Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Michigan, Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Alaska…Game harvested includes: Dell Sheep, Elk, Big Horn and Stone Sheep, Mountain Goat, Grizzly Bear, Wolf, White Tail Deer, Antelope, Mountain Lion, and many African animals…He has harvested a total of 29 animals, 15 of them made the Safai Club International World Record Book.

CHRISTIN SOBECK (AHS 2001)

Awarded 10 letters at Alpena High School, including four each in softball and volleyball…Played on three state champion Little League teams, including two teams that went 20-0…Named to Babe Ruth Tournament team three years…four-year starter on Alpena’s softball team and won all-district, all-region, all-conference and all-state honors…Played four years at Central Michigan, starting four years as an outfielder…Two-time MAC all-conference…2005 MAC all-conference tournament team…Five-time MAC West Player of the Week…Graduated with CMU’s home-run record and was listed in the top 5 for doubles and RBIs…Five-time member of the USA Women’s Baseball Team and won bronze medals in 2008 and 2010.

DICK SPENCER (AHS 1953)

Earned nine high school letters after two years at Flint Northern, won one letter each in baseball, basketball and track at Alpena High…Graduated from Alpena Community College in 1956 and won seven letters…ended his ACC basketball career as the school’s leading scorer and won all-state honors twice…Excelled in church and city-league basketball and played locally in softball leagues…As a senior athlete, his team has won three national titles.

RAY TIMM (AHS, 1965)

Awarded letters in track and gymnastics at Alpena High School…Finished three in the horizontal bars at Michigan State Gymnastics Championship…Competed for three years on the University of Michigan’s Gymnastics team…Coached as an assistant to Jack Discher from 1973-1977 and mentored eight all-staters…Became the head coach in 1978 and coached Alpena to three state titles and two runner-up finishes in five years…Coached 12 individual state champions and 13 All-Americans.

LYLE VANWORMER (CCHS 1968)

Awarded five letters playing football, basketball and track for the Thunderbolts…Professional archery performer who’s finished first 13 times in state sanctioned shoots…Shot five perfect scores at Outdoor Nationals, setting three state records…Finished in the top-20 in the Outdoor Nationals for 10 consecutive years…Won team goal medal at 70 meters at NAA Outdoor Nationals, setting a record that still stands (2001)… Had eight-year average of 300 55X’s.
