Local school board ROUNDUP
A roundup of recent activity by Northeast Michigan school boards:
∫ The Alcona Community Schools Board of Education approved the resignation of Serena Birk as a paraprofessional and rehired her as a special education teacher.
The board also approved the resignation of Jessica Smith as a custodian and rehired her as a special education teacher.
Amy Crevier was hired as an elementary school teacher.
∫ The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education opted into Schools of Choice to allow students from other districts to attend schools within APS.
The board also approved the purchase of a new bus from Midwest Transit for $90,040 and hired Thrun Law Firm for legal matters and Straley, Lamp, & Kraenzlein as the district’s auditing firm.
∫ The Atlanta Community Schools Board of Education approved the district’s 2019-20 course guide.
The board approved the contract for Business Manager Jill Olsen for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years and approved resignations from athletic director Jack Gebauer and Crystal Horrocks.
∫ The Hillman Community Schools Board of Education approved nine layoffs, but recalled five of those employees, during a series of meetings in July as the district works to overcome a roughly $465,000 budget shortfall. The board also approved implementing a sports fee of $50 per student per sport.
Contracts through the 2020-21 school year were approved for Business Manager Jill Olsen, Maintenance Supervisor Randy Herbek, Food Service Director Jeff Powers, and Technology Director Michael Probert.
∫ The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District Board of Education voted to enter into a contract with the Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency’s School Success Program for $20,000.
The board also appointed Thrun Law Firm as district counsel and appointed Straley, Lamp, & Kraenzlein as district auditors.
