Abortion should be a godly issue, not political

“In God We Trust” This is still on our coins and bills and it is in our pledge to the flag. And yet it seems like many laws that are passed go against God’s will. I feel that this November’s election is mostly about one thing. That is the killing of the unborn. Why is this a political issue when it should be a godly issue? God gave us 10 commanders. One is “Thou shall not kill.” Yet it is that a woman should have that freedom. There are other freedoms a woman doesn’t have seatbelts, helmets, assisted suicide, or serving their own children a glass of wine before they ...

Don’t let politics control our school system

Alpena is blessed with an amazing school system. Our teachers and school staff work tirelessly. The administration is very dedicated. We should be very proud and support them whenever possible. All of the staff, work at the direction and guidance of the elected school board. This board is extremely important to the health and well-being of our school system. Honestly, I have never closely watched the school board election. I just voted for the people I knew or were familiar with. This time it’s different. I am very concerned at an effort to drag politics into our schools. I see ...

Women’s civil rights are still under attack

The Supreme Court ruling this summer overturning Roe v. Wade left a woman’s Right to Autonomy to state jurisdiction and instantly relegated all women to second-class citizen status. For the first time in our history, a right granted by the court has been rescinded and women’s constitutionally endowed right of freedom and privacy, as guaranteed in our Constitution, will depend on where you live. The majority-male Supreme Court in a 6-3 decision ruled government, not women, will arbitrate women’s reproductive options. This Supreme Court ruling evidenced the stark divide that exists ...

Clarifying inaccurate comments on Prop. 3

In response to the Oct 1, 2022 letter-to-the editor regarding Proposition 3, several of the points made are incomplete and/or incorrect. Let me clear them up. Prop. 3 restores the same rights we had under Roe v Wade for 50 years. Prop. 3, added to our State Constitution, gives the broad rights to citizens to make their own private pregnancy medical decisions. Prop. 3 also specifically gives the state the ability to limit these rights in certain circumstances. In response to the description of late-stage abortion in the Oct 1 letter, here are facts. Late-stage abortion is incredibly ...

Protect reproductive health; vote no on Prop. 3

Let’s look at Michigan’s Proposal 3 for November 2022. First, this is a proposal to change the constitution of our state, not a new law that can be rewritten at a later date. The italicized phrases which follow are the amendment’s texts. The proposed amendment would: Establish new individual right to reproductive freedom, including the right to make and carry out all decisions about pregnancy… The proposal language omits the word adult. With this proposal minors could seek abortion with no parental consent. Teens can be brought to abortion centers by adult men who have ...

Money needs to go to Ian victims, other needs

As I write this, we are far from over from the devastation of Hurricane Ian. A large blocking high pressure area over the Great Lakes and New York, is slowing down the Northward movement, which is bad news. Moisture from the gulf and the Atlantic Gulf Stream will be streaming north and colliding with the Appalachians for more catastrophic flooding. But what boils my blood is the billions that Biden is handing away to a former Russian country in which we have no interest and is not of any concern of ours. Biden gave away in the last three months, billions, and now he proposes another ...
