Hillman High School Sports HOF to induct class of 2018

The 1994 team will be honored during Saturday’s Hillman High School Sports Hall of Fame ceremony held at Hillman High School, along with Michael Oswald, Beverly Allen Skinner and Loretta Eleanor (Snorts) Hubert.
Hillman High School has had its fair share of standout athletes pass through the hallways and make their mark while proudly wearing the orange and black.
On Saturday, the Hillman High School Sports Hall of Fame will proudly induct its fifth class.
The 2018 class consists of a two-time Academic All-American, a 1,000 point scorer and rebound, along with a “Team of Destiny” in the 1994 State Champion baseball team.
The inductees include Michael Oswald, Beverly Allen Skinner, the 1994 Hillman baseball team and Loretta Eleanor (Snorts) Hubert.
“I think like all Hall of Fame’s they are sacred and one of our biggest goals is to showcase out past and try to link the Hall of Fame to our current athletes,” Hillman Athletic Director Eric Muszynski said. “I know as an athlete, I always tried to strive and do the best for my school, community and you also had personal goals academically and athletically. I believe out Hall of Fame represents this as we continue to grow and it gives our athletes something to strive for.”
Muszynski has been apart of the Hall of Fame committee for five years and this is his first as Athletic Director.
“My feelings remain the same and we want to showcase our rich athletic and academic tradition and I feel like we have established a great foundation and we look forward to growing as a Hall and our hopes are that we continue to get individuals to nominate some of the great athletes and teams that are still out there,” Muszynski said. “We have a great class this year who have excelled on and off the playing fields.”
Oswald graduated in 1998 and was a three-time All-State baseball player and a two-time All-State football player. Oswald was also All-Region in golf and earned three letters in basketball.
Oswald earned 14 varsity letters and was a member of the 1997 State Champion baseball team, the 1995 state runner-up team, regional golf champion and was apart of of three football playoff qualifiers.
Oswald was All-Conference and was also an All-Academic selection in various sports. After his days as a Tiger, Oswald became a Wildcat, representing Hillman well as he earned a football scholarship and later became a two-time Academic All-American at Northern Michigan University.
Oswald was the Valedictorian and was Academic All-State at Hillman and after graduating with a Construction Management degree from Northern Michigan, Oswald gave back to the University and is on the Advisory Board for Construction Management and is also a member of the Alumni Board at Northern Michigan University.
Oswald made academics a priority in his life and is now part owner and the number two man for Hill & Wilkinson Construction based out of Texas and is the Chief Operation Officer of the company that bring in five million dollars a year in revenue.
Skinner graduated from Hillman in 1975 and was an outstanding three sport athlete. Skinner played basketball, softball and competed in track. She scored over 1,000 points in her career and grabbed over 1,000 rebounds as well. Those numbers placed her third all time in scoring and she once ripped down 36 rebounds in a game which still stands as a school record.
Skinner earned conference MVP honors in 1974 and was named to the all-conference team in 1973-9174. She was also a member of teams that won two conference titles, a pair of district titles and a regional championship.
The highlight of Skinner’s track career occurred when she placed fourth in the state for Shot Put in 1975.
Skinner ended her career earning 12 varsity letters and went on to play volleyball and basketball at Alpena Community College. Skinner eventually went on to coach volleyball, basketball and softball at many levels over 16 years.
Hubert will be Hillman’s recipient of The Richard Brown Trailblazer Award this year. Hubert or as many knew as (Snorts) graduated in 1943. The Richard Brown Trailblazer Award honors athletes from a distant generation that helped blaze the trail for past and present athletes at Hillman High School.
Lastly, the Hillman High School Sports Hall of Fame will honor the 1994 state champion baseball team.
The team became Hillman’s second state champion and was considered “The Team of Destiny” by legendary coach Dave Checkley.
The team graduated many All-State players and was loaded with talent on a roster that consisted of Greg Jones, Jory Benac, Mike Cordes, Billy Vogt, Mark Oswald, Lucas Shepherd, Todd Doge, Cory Davis, Robert Golombeski and Chris Kennard.
The team was led by Checkley and was assisted by Dan Kennard, Matt DeBoer and Mike Oswald.
The Hillman High School Sports Hall of Fame would like to invite all who would like to attend the induction ceremony on Saturday at Hillman High School at 2:00 p.m.
The new inductees will also be honored at halftime of the Tigers football game to go along with other homecoming activities in tomorrow nights game against Posen.
