Alpena boys dominate Rudyard, remain undefeated

ALPENA – The Alpena Wildcats baseball team picked up two more victories on Thursday, defeating Rudyard 8-0, and 12-4. The victories keeps Alpena’s eight-game win streak intact and makes them undefeated for the season, with a perfect 8-0 record.

A big third inning set the tone in game one of a doubleheader, asThe Wildcats scored five runs and that was enough to propel them to the win.

Bryson Collegnon started the inning with a double to left field, then Aidan Aube laced a line drive single to center field, driving in Collegnon.

Aube would score on a sacrifice fly to right field by Kadyn Vanderveer.

Alpena added three more runs in the inning thanks to RBIs from Clark Weir and Cam McEwyn. Weir would score when Eli Tessmer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Alpena added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, including an RBI double by Brady Chapman, that drove in Kadyn Vanderveer and Weir. Chapman would score on a wild pitch, giving Alpena the 8-0 lead.

Zach Orban got the win on the mound, giving up one hit, and zero runs in four innings of work.

The Wildcats struck first in game two of the doubleheader. In the bottom of the first inning, Troy MacArther stroked a RBI single, scoring Chapman. In the bottom of the third inning MacArther would add another RBI single to his stat line, driving in Vanderveer.

Things got interesting in the top of the fourth inning however when Rudyard scored four runs and took a brief 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the inning Alpena’s bats responded and the game was never in doubt afterward.

Blayze Most hit a line drive triple to center field driving in Dillan Gagnon and Owen Kaiser and tying the game at four. Alpena added two more runs in the inning when Weir hit a sacrifice fly to left field that drove in Chapman and Most.

The fifth inning would be the last inning as Alpena scored six more runs, and the game was called due to darkness.

Pitcher Kadyn Vanderveer picked up the win, allowing one hit, and zero runs in one and two-thirds innings.

Alpena Head Coach Eric MacKenzie discussed what he liked about his team’s effort on Thursday.

“Overall, I was happy, I thought we hit the ball and ran the bases well, we were aggressive, and I thought we pitched well,” MacKenzie said. “There are a couple things we need to shore up on defense and that will come the more we play outside.”
