Alpena girls sweep Stoney Creek on Friday, split with Swan Valley on Saturday
The Alpena Wildcats varsity softball team defeated the Stoney Creek Cougars in both games of their doubleheader on Friday, 10-5, and 9-3.
In game one of the doubleheader, Wildcats senior Paige Samp drove in four runs on three hits, including an inside the park home run in the fourth inning that drove in three runs. Samp also hit a triple in the seventh inning driving in her fourth run of the game.
In game two Alpena had 12 hits for the game, including three hit games from senior Georgia Alberts and Emma Darga. Three Wildcats had multiple hit games including Laura Poli, Paige Samp, and Claire Jarema.
The Alpena Wildcats varsity softball team split a doubleheader with the Swan Valley Vikings 2-1, and 4-7 on Saturday.
The first game was a low scoring pitcher’s duel; Alpena senior Paige Samp got the start on the mound and recorded 21 outs. Samp allowed three hits, and one run over seven innings, with six strikeouts and no walks. Juniors Lilly Rospierski and Madalyn Spomer each secured two RBIs in the victory.
Alpena remained in control until the bottom of the fifth inning in the second game of the double header. Spomer knocked in two RBIs in the top of the third inning with a home run to center field.
The Vikings scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead. The most significant of those three hits being a grand slam that drove in four runs.
Four players recorded hits for the Wildcats, including Samp, Spomer, Georgia Alberts and Bella Dickens.
