ALGONAC – The Alpena Wildcats varsity baseball earned a pair of victories on Saturday, winning game one 5-4 against the Algonac Muskrats 5-4, and game two 14-3 against the Brandon Blackhawks.
During the first game, the Wildcats were trailing 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Gavin Ross hit a line drive double to right field. After Ethan Walker flew out to left field, Clark Weir hit a triple driving in Ross and making the score 2-1.
Next to bat for Alpena was Brady Chapman who reached first base after being hit by a pitch. Eli Tessmer then hit a single to center field, driving in Weir, advancing Chapman to second base and tying the game 2-2. Then Cam Mcewen hit a single on an infield ground ball, advancing Chapman to third, and Tessmer to second.
Chapman would score off a ground ball hit by Blayze Most who was thrown out at first base, giving the Wildcats their first lead of the game 3-2, and advancing Mcewen to third base. Tessmer would then score on an errand pitch giving Alpena a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, Ross reached first base courtesy of a walk, before stealing second base. Weir was up to bat next and delivered with a single to left field, driving in Ross and extending the lead to 5-2. Algonac would add runs in the sixth and seventh inning, but it was not enough, as the Wildcats secured a 5-4 victory.
The second game was not as dramatic for the Wildcats as their bats did most of the talking, scoring eight runs in the second inning. Five Alpena players drove in runs, including Aidan Aube, Owen Kaiser, Eion Eades, Owen Vandusen, and Gavin Ross.
Troy MacArther led the way with two hits during three at bats and Clark Weir stole three bases in the game.
The Wildcats will play Sault Ste Marie at home today with the game scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
