ALPENA – The Wildcats varsity baseball team remains undefeated after securing two wins against the Sault Area Blue Devils, 16-5, and 5-2, on Tuesday.

Alpena is now 6-0 on the young season.

The Wildcats had a big first inning, scoring seven runs on seven hits and taking a 7-1 lead. Alpena added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning when Zach Orban hit a sacrifice fly to center field driving in Eion Eades.

After Owen Kaiser reached first base on a walk, Ethan Walker hit a line-drive double to left field, scoring three runs and giving Alpena an 11-1 lead.

The Wildcats would tack on five more runs before the game was called due to the run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Eli Tessmer picked up the win for Alpena, allowing five hits, and five runs over four innings, striking out seven batters and walking four. Eades came on in relief and allowed zero hits and chalked up two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Wildcats held the Blue Devils scoreless until the top of the sixth inning thanks to a strong effort on the mound from Eion Eades. Eades allowed one hit and two runs in five innings of action, with 11 strikeouts.

With a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, Alpena would add two more runs thanks to aggressive base running. Ethan Walker started the inning with an infield single to third base. The next batter, Brady Chapman, reached first base after being hit by a pitch, advancing Walker to second base.

Walker would then score after a throwing error occurred while attempting to steal third base, and Chapman advanced to third base. Cam Mcewen hit a fly ball to center field, driving in Chapman and giving Alpena a 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Alpena Head Coach Eric MacKenzie described his team’s effort and how his team performed Tuesday.

“I really like that we were aggressive on the bases, we were aggressive at the plate, I thought our hitting was outstanding,” MacKenzie said. Overall, we played well, we are getting better every day, we still have a few things to clean up a bit, but I am pleased with our effort.”
