Harrisville radio station hosting annual fundraiser

ALPENA — Alcona County residents will get a chance to support a local radio station this weekend.

On Saturday, the Alcona Music Project will host its annual WTF Live Music Fundraiser at Maria Hall on M-72 to help raise money to support Harrisville-based radio station WXTF-LP 97.9 FM.

WXTF-LP is a low-power, commercial free radio station that has been dedicated to providing the Alcona community with information and entertainment since its formation in 2014.

The Alcona Music Project is a non-profit formed in December 2019. Since then, the project has organized the WTF fundraiser as a way to both cover operational costs and promote live local music in Alcona County.

WXFL-LP formerly operated in the basement of a lakeside home in Harrisville until a building became available after the COVID-19 pandemic.

After some time, the station renovated its new building on Main Street in Harrisville with the addition of a new highly efficient heating system, a backup generator, and modifications done to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and finally relocated all its equipment to the new studio and resumed operations.

According to its website — 979harrisville.org — the Alcona’s Music Project’s mission is to “create create diverse cultural and community outreach for Alcona County and beyond with on-air music, eclectic DJs, live musicians, community event support, news and the best music you won’t hear anywhere else.”

WXTP’s lineup of programs currently includes shows such as Barry’s Dynamite Show, Annie and the Tree Guy, The Crunchy Mix Show, Tales from the Dork Side, and many more.

“For me, it has been a lifelong dream to work in broadcasting. The listeners are part of the station with their input and encouragement,” Michael Wnuk, vice president of the Alcona Music Project, said. “Now that we have our station established, we can focus on providing news and information to the listeners and offer a space for musicians to perform into the future.”

The fundraiser will go from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. feature live performances from Bob Hausler, Ian Mcconnell, JW Thomas, Roger Ponder, Gary Browe, The Brandons, Gypsy Heart, and Big Willy.

Additionally, the fundraiser will have two food trucks on site, a wine and beer cash bar, a silent auction for many “unusual” items, 50/50 drawings, and WTF merchandise for sale.
