Popular Rogers City bakery opens temporary Alpena location

News Photo by Steve Schulwitz Tradewinds Bakery employees Sharon Fasse, left, and Jennifer Thompson set out more doughnuts at a pop-up bakery in Alpena today. The store will be open until Friday, but, if business is solid, it could lead to the bakery opening full time in Alpena.

ALPENA — Tradewinds Bakery, a popular stop for people in Rogers City who have a craving for a treat, is giving Alpena residents a taste of its sweets.

If the demand is strong enough, the bakery could open full time down the road.

Tradewinds owners Aaron and Sarah Romel decided to host a pop-up shop on 2nd Avenue next to the Old Polish Corner that will open daily through Friday, from 6:30 a.m. until the baked goods are gone.

If Tuesday morning was any indicator, business could be strong for Tradewinds in Alpena, as Aaron Romel had to make a trip back to Rogers City to load up with more product only a few short hours after opening the doors.

He said the plans to open for the rest of the week were thrown together quickly, but he is impressed with how the people in Alpena have responded so far.

“With spring break in Rogers City this week, we were kind of slow, so we decided to give Alpena a try, and the reaction has been overwhelming,” Aaron Romel said.

The plan for Alpena came together around 6 p.m. Monday night, and Romel and his team quickly spruced up the building and began the hours of baking needed to properly stock it.

He said he has had preliminary discussion with the building’s owner about the possibility of making it the bakery’s permanent home, should things go well.

“Depending on how well it goes, there is potential for the future,” he said.

Although the bakery is well known for its doughnuts, there are many other tasty options certain to satisfy most cravings. At the shop, shelves and tables are lined with Easter-themed sugar cookies, brownies, cream rolls, freshly baked bread, and much more.

Just because Tradewinds has an interest in Alpena doesn’t mean its faithful customers will be forgotten about, Aaron Romel said. He said the residents of Rogers City have been very dedicated to his business and are the ones that make any thought of expansion possible.

“Our main place is always going to be Rogers City, because that is the community that supported us from the get-go, so that will never change, for sure,” he said.
