Community invited to ‘Wishing Wall for America’

ALPENA — The League of Women Voters of Northeast Michigan (LWVNEMI) invites residents throughout the region to participate in its interactive “Wishing Wall for America” community event on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

In a press release on Thursday, the league stated that as part of the Alpena Community Sestercentennial Celebration, the event will take place near Alpena City Hall where community members can post their wishes for America.

According to the release, the Wishing Wall is part of the nationwide commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Community members of all ages are encouraged to contribute written messages expressing their vision for the nation’s future, the values they hope to preserve, and the changes they would like to see for generations to come.

“The Wishing Wall gives people an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s history while looking ahead to the future,” Elaine Stenger, LWVNEMI vice president, said in the release. “It’s a chance for community members to share what democracy means to them and what they hope America will become over the next 250 years.”

Participants will be invited to write their wishes and aspirations on cards that will be displayed as part of a public installation, according to the release. The project is designed to foster civic engagement, encourage thoughtful conversation, and celebrate diverse voices.

The event is free and open to the public. The league encourages individuals, families, students, and community organizations to participate.
