Shanties shan’t be

A fishing shanty, blown onto its side in Thursday’s winds, tilts on Grand Lake as ice crackles and pops near the shore on Friday. The owner has been reminded that shanties in Northern Michigan must be removed by midnight of March 15, according to Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jon Sklba. Upper Peninsula shanties must be removed by March 31. Grand Lake still has over one foot of ice in some spots, but ice in March is unstable and inconsistent, Sklba said. Information about ice safety can be found at michigan.gov/icesafety.
