PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena hockey team falls in quarterfinal

HOCKEY

Calumet 6, Alpena 0

MARQUETTE — The Wildcats came up empty-handed in a Division 3 quarterfinal Wednesday, falling behind 2-0 after one period and 4-0 after two frames.

Alpena (5-12-1) took an early timeout halfway through the opening period and Calumet connected on the power-play twice in the opening frame.

Calumet scored quickly in the second period to take a 3-0 lead and Jackson Riley completed a hat trick for the Copper Kings (17-0-1) in the frame to give Calumet a 4-0 lead.

“I thought we did a decent job, but we took some penalties that got us off our game and we veered away from the game plan,” Alpena coach Chris Limback said. “There’s a reason they’re the No. 1 team in the state. I’ll be curious to see how they do in the final four.”

Calumet advances to play Chelsea in the second of two semifinals on Friday.

Alpena finished the season with three wins in its final six games to earn its ninth regional championship in program history and second in three years.
