LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Hillman advances in district tournament

BOYS BASKETBALL

TC West 71, Alpena 49

TRAVERSE CITY– The Wildcats (3-11) played well for the first, third and fourth quarters, but the second quarter cost them in a Division 1 district quarterfinal loss. The Titans outscored them 24-10 in that period and went into halftime with a 37-20 lead after pressuring the Wildcats and forcing tournovers. Cooper Bright led Alpena with 16 points, Austin Prue added 12 and Mason Mumford had eight.

Hillman 68, Inland Lakes 33

ONAWAY — The Tigers used a 25-7 start to the game to blow by the Bulldogs in a Division 4 district quarterfinal. Jeff Klein scored a career-high 21 points to lead Hillman (11-7) and Trenton Taratuta added 15. Hillman will play Posen on Thursday in a semifinal matchup in Onaway.

“It was a great program win and multiple guys stepped up tonight and gave great effort,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Grand Rapids 79, Alpena 30

GRAND RAPIDS — The Lumberjacks (1-9) struggled to find their footing early in the game and did the best they could against a Grand Rapids squad that outplayed them on both ends of the floor, according to coach Bobby Allen.

ACC hosts Muskegon on Friday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Alpena 72, Grand Rapids 69

GRAND RAPIDS — Parker Neu had 27 points and 16 rebounds as the Lumberjacks (2-8) railed from 15 points down in the second half to pull out a win. Raquan Huntley had 16 points for ACC, Cleveland Baker had 13 points and Chris DeRocher had 11 points and five assists.

“This is the team I have been talking about all year. Everyone did their job tonight and did it well,” ACC coach Mark Jacobs said. “We have a talented ball club and tonight we proved it.”

ACC hosts Muskegon on Friday.
