PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena earns first BNC win

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Alpena 36, TC Central 28

Allie DeRocher had 10 points and Alayna Trelfa and Elyse Clarke each added six for the Wildcats (2-3, 1-3 Big North Conference) who earned their first conference win of 2021. Alpena went 10-of-14 from the free throw line for the night and used a solid defensive effort to hold off the Trojans down the stretch.

“We talked about trying to win every quarter and we won the first and third quarters,” Alpena coach Erin Andrews said. “We played good defense tonight and held them off in the second and fourth quarters.”

Alpena hosts Ogemaw Heights on Monday.

Posen 61, Fairview 21

Ella Szatkowski had 24 points and Faith Cousins added 10 for the Vikings (3-1, 3-0 North Star League), who rolled to another easy win; their second in as many nights. Talisa Yoder led Fairview with six points.

“We were pretty shaky in the first half,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said. “But we woke up and played like we know how to play.”

Posen hosts Hillman on Monday.

Alcona 31, Rogers City 24

Karen Sharboneau had 13 points for the Tigers (4-1), who held off a third quarter charge by the Hurons (2-2, 2-1 North Star League).

“We were a little sluggish and had a hard time getting to the pace we wanted, but we were able to pull out the win,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said.

The Hurons trailed 15-6 at halftime and cut the lead to four in the third quarter, but couldn’t pull any closer.

Karissa Rabeau led Rogers City with 15 points.

“We played hard. They got some kick-backs inside that hurt us,” Rogers City coach Duane Pitts said.

Alcona hosts Tawas on Monday and Rogers City hosts Onaway on Saturday in a varsity doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Onaway 54, Joburg 52

Kevin Pearson had 21 points for Onaway and Jager Mix added 16 as the Cardinals clamped down defensive on Joburg late in the game, despite being at a size disadvantage. Onaway led 32-28 at halftime and 40-39 after three quarters. Spencer Nash added 11 points for Onaway and Jaden Mix had five.

“Johannesburg had a huge size advantage all night on us, but we had some big rebounds late in the game,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “Offensively, we moved the ball extremely well. Kevin had a solid game, nobody could stop him getting to the rim.”

Onaway plays at Rogers City on Saturday.
