PREP ROUNDUP: Owls roll past Cards to improve to 7-0

OSCODA–The Oscoda boys basketball team continues to roll.

Owen Franklin scored 32 points and Gavin Lueck added 20 as the Owls dominated Whittemore-Prescott 99-34 on Thursday at home.

Michael Gepfrey added 13 points for Oscoda (7-0) and Itsuto Mantani added nine.

Dana Thorson led Whittemore with 13 points.

Oscoda hosts Atlanta on Monday.

Rogers City 59,

Alcona 45

ROGERS CITY–Nick Freel scored 17 points and the Rogers City boys basketball team earned their third straight win on Thursday, topping Alcona 59-45 at home.

Cam Stretch added 14 points, JD Ellenberger chipped in with 12 for the Hurons (4-3) and Lewis Fleming added 10.

“It was a great game. Hats off to Alcona, who played great,” Rogers City coach Matt Ponik said. “We tightened up the defense in the second half and were able to pull away with some stops and converting free throws.”

Rogers City hosts Au Gres on Tuesday.

Mancelona 67,

Onaway 52

MANCELONA–One bad quarter cost the Onaway boys basketball team a chance at a win on Thursday.

Mancelona managed to stay one step ahead of the Cardinals and won 67-52 at home.

Onaway (0-6) led 16-13 after one quarter, trailed 31-29 at halftime and trailed 50-33 after three quarters.

That 19-4 run by the Ironmen spelled doom for the Cardinals, who paid dearly for more than a handful of missed chances on offense.

“We came out and we didn’t take care of the ball. That was the difference,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “We had about five uncontested layups we couldn’t convert. But the guys are battling their butts off and I’m really happy with how things are going.”

Jager Mix led Onaway with 20 points, Kevin Pearson added 14 points and Spencer Nash added 10.

Onaway hosts Bellaire on Tuesday.
