Alpena distance runners Boyd and Smith earn top honors at Honor Roll Invitational

A record-setting day put Maddy Boyd back in a familiar spot.

The Alpena High senior broke two meet records during the 16th annual Alpena News Honor Roll Track and Field Invitational on Tuesday at Thunder Bay Junior High School.

Boyd bettered her own meet mark in the 1,600 run crossing the line in 5:20.31, bettering the previous mark of 5:23.38 she set last year. She followed that up by setting a new record in the 3,200 run (11:54.20), breaking the old record (11:55.58) set by Elaine Lowe in 2013.

Those wins together with a win in the 800 run and a group win in the 1,600 relay was more than enough to earn Boyd Female Athlete of the Meet honors for the second time in her career.

She ran the distance gamut two seasons ago as a sophomore to earn the honor. She finished with nine individual Honor Roll wins and two meet records in four seasons after Tuesday’s performance.

“It’s exciting. I didn’t really expect to (win again) since I won before, so it was kind of nice. I broke two meet records today so I knew I kind of had a chance. It’s exciting,” Boyd said. “I was really happy with it. I was a little nervous about the two-mile because I was really tired, but I was really happy I was able to crank out that meet record.”

Alpena’s excellence in the distance races came through on the boys side too as Josh Smith was named Male Athlete of the Meet. Smith, who like Boyd, has been a superstar in the distance races for Alpena for several years, had another big day on Tuesday.

He won the 800 (2:00.25) and 1,600 runs (4:38.88) and was part of winning 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams. The Alpena senior finishes his career with four individual meet wins and meet records in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

“It feels great. I went into it and I was hoping I could win it,” Smith said. “I heard he (Smith’s brother Aden) dropped out of a couple (events), so I was like ‘I’ve got to go for it.’ I thought I did well. I was going in (wanting) to win in everything and I felt good in all of it.”

Boyd’s new records were two of five set by local athletes on Tuesday under cloudy conditions at TBJH. Alpena’s Gabe Bullis bettered his own meet record in the pole vault from 14-6 to 15-3.

Alpena’s Eli Winter continued a stellar season by sweeping the boys throwing events and setting new meet records in both. He won the shot put with a throw of 53 feet and won the discus with a throw of 168 feet. Both distances topped previous meet marks set by Matt Gerow in 2008 of 51 feet, 4 3/4 inches and 153 feet, 2 inches respectively.

After a dazzling performance at regionals in which she swept the sprinting events, Alcona’s Lily Bilbey repeated the feat on Tuesday, winning the 100 dash (12.90), 200 dash (27.92) and 400 dash (1:04.27) while also running a leg of the 400 relay and helping Alcona win in 55.47.

Hillman’s Gunner Mellingen won the boys 200 dash (23.07) and long jump (20-6 1/2). His time in the 200 set a new Hillman record, breaking the old mark of 23.12 set by Brandon Bauer.

Alpena’s Savannah Thomson swept the girls hurdle events, winning the 100 hurdles in 17.07 seconds and winning the 300 hurdles in 51.11 seconds.

Alpena also swept the girls throws as Faith Weide was a repeat winner in the shot put (38-0 1/2) and discus (109-3).
