Remember write-in candidates for local races

We are just over a month away from Election Day. Many are talking about the candidates for president and for Congress, but don’t forget about the individuals running in local elections. These are individuals who know our community best. They live here, work here, and they understand the needs of the area. When you vote this election, keep in mind that the list of names on the ballot for county commissioner and Alpena Public Schools board member is not the complete list of everyone running for those positions. There are fantastic write-in candidates that I encourage everyone to ...

We can’t let Donald Trump create more chaos

My fellow Americans, As an independent, moderate voter, I will not and cannot sit by idly and let Donald Trump keep undermining this country and all men and women who served with valor get elected for a second term. He is unfit! After Jan. 6, while he sat for almost four hours doing nothing while his followers desecrated our capitol, all because of the BIG LIE that he promoted of his loss of the 2020 election. He later admitted he lost by a whisker. He’s a lunatic. He does not deserve to be commander in chief. We don’t need the chaos. We must keep NATO intact. He does not ...

Gordon Snow should withdraw his candidacy

For the sake of our kids … In the editorial section of this past Saturday’s Alpena News, Justin Hinkley, publisher and editor, ran a column, “The story behind the story on Snow’s email.” To recite a couple quotes from that story: “We had a statement from a Michigan Press Association attorney who reviewed the email calling the missive ‘problematic’ and saying it might violate the Michigan Campaign Finance Act’s prohibition of using public resources for campaigns because Snow had communicated with each of the principals through their school email accounts. “At ...

Alpena has become my home and my center

Alpena has become my home, the place I venture forth from and always return to, not an accident of birth and providence, but chosen. My center. WILLIAM L. MORRISON, Ossineke

NGOs aiding migrants should repay all of us

Dear Editor: Kudos to Mr. McClung on his letter Sept. 7. Who do these non-governmental organizations (NGOs) think they are, and what nerve and right do they have to circumvent the Congress, and the will of the people? When and if we get responsible people in office, they should immediately charge these organizations, and whoever authorized them with treason for aiding and abetting felon illegal immigrants! They have catered and pampered these people with outrageous costs imposed on the taxpayer, like lodging with meals in places like Ramada Inn. They should be forced to repay the ...

Our great Alpena Plaza Pool is busy, valued

Since April 2022, a group of businesses, government entities, foundations, school district, and other invested members have held monthly meetings discussing the need for a new pool while seeking the best location, surveying the community, and discussing the organizational structure and fiduciary agent going forward. Alpena County commissioners do not want to put money into the 50-year-old pool to repair worn-out or irreplaceable parts. The Plaza Pool continues to be responsible to Alpena County for the rest of the Ameresco energy bond. Yearly operations of the pool are funded by the ...
