Plaza Pool is a valuable community asset

Why does Alpena need a community pool? Why can’t we just “shut it down?”

1. It provides swim lessons for the safety of our citizens. In 2019, the last nonCOVID/twelve-month year, approximately 302 group lessons and 474 private lessons were given by certified lifeguards in the Plaza Pool, in addition to the approximately 318 second graders who completed the Ready, Set, Swim! Program.

2. It is a safe option for exercise for those that cannot do weight bearing exercise for fitness.

3. It provides a variety of group exercise classes for all levels of swimmers or nonswimmers.

4. It schedules times for family recreation at low — and at times, no cost. The Alpena County Youth and Rec Millage has provided free Friday Family Swims in addition to various free Sunday Open Swims.

5. Many outside groups use the pool during the year.

6. More than 50 children participate in the Thunder Bay Schooners, a competitive swim team that calls the Plaza Pool home.

7. It creates jobs for our area youth. At the current time, the Plaza Pool employs nine fully certified lifeguards and one full time director.

8. It brings community members together for socialization. Seniors need mental as well as emotional support.

9. It enhances and supports the recreation that our area has to offer year-round. Many industries and businesses have reported that recreation is important to families moving to our area. A community pool adds to our property values.

10. It is fun and healthy. The Plaza Pool can be used 12 months of the year and is a healthy lifetime sport that can be done individually or with a group.

Please visit the Alpena Plaza Pool. It is a valuable community asset that needs community support.
