LETTER TO THE EDITOR GUIDELINES
The Alpena News welcomes Letters to the Editor from residents in Northeast Michigan. These editorials are published weekly on Saturdays and can be found on A4 of our commentary section and The Alpena News website.
Whether you’d like to comment on local politics, offer praise for a local organization and volunteers, or offer advice, letters are a great medium to do so.
We invite all thoughts, concerns, ideas, and are tolerant of however people would like to express their opinions. However, we do not tolerate obscenities, threats, slander, and will not publish obvious examples of libel. We request that those who submit letters include a phone number so if we have questions or concerns, we can direct them to the author.
All letters must be verified by The News with the writer and a writer may only have one letter published per month.
Our staff enjoys watching the public engage with our publication and we enjoy reading the opinions of our neighbors. Letters are a great way to have your voice heard and practice your right to Freedom of Speech.
Also, local columns are accepted but their publication is determined by the editor, solely.
Word count
Please keep letters to 300 words or less. Though it may seem excessive, we will not publish letters that are 301 words. Conserving space for everyone’s opinions is important to us.
Editorial rights
We reserve the right to make light, non-substantive edits. However, we will notify authors of these edits prior to publication either via phone or email.
Contact information
Please include the following information somewhere in your submission.
– Your full name (first and last)
– City/county of residence
– Contact information (phone number and/or email address)
Deadlines
Letters must be submitted by 1 p.m. on Friday each week to be considered for that week’s Saturday edition. This gives our staff time to review submissions and contact authors if we have further questions.
