New MSP cold case unit formed in Northern Michigan
A new Michigan State Police unit has been formed in Northern Michigan The new special unit is called the Seventh District Cold Case Team, which will operate out of the district headquarters located in Gaylord within the Special Investigation Section.
The purpose of this team is to review, organize, and maintain the MSP Seventh District cold cases and associated property as well as further the investigations.
The team will be led by Detective Sergeant Matt Wilt and will include two detective troopers who have yet to be assigned.
The team will evaluate the cold cases in Northern Michigan and determine their solvability based on a metrics system. With the advancement of DNA analysis and other investigative techniques the MSP wants to take a fresh look at older cases.
