Record-high temp set Tuesday

ALPENA — Alpena was among many communities in northern Michigan to set a record-high temperature on Tuesday.

The temperature climbed to 92 degrees on Tuesday, beating the previous record of 90 degrees set in 1949, according to Dan Cornish, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord.

Cornish said the temperature fluctuated because of the “lake breeze.” The air over the Great Lakes is colder, he said, and east winds off of Lake Huron kept Alpena cooler than it was inland for most of the day.

“That lake breeze that was keeping Alpena cooler, since it’s pretty close to Lake Huron, retreated, and we had westerly winds. The westerly winds helped that hot inland air move into Alpena and actually caused the temperature to jump from 83 (degrees) at 4 p.m., which is so hot, to 92 (degrees) at 5 p.m.,” he said.

Cornish said he is not expecting any more records to be broken this week, as the high temperatures are expected to be in the lower- to upper-70s. He said many of the records for June are in the upper-80s.
