Virtual program highlights pelvic health after cancer treatment

Olivia Shelton, P.T., D.P.T., Cert. D.N., MyMichigan Health pelvic health physical therapist.

MIDLAND – Cancer treatment can bring significant changes that extend beyond a person’s diagnosis and recovery. Surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and hormonal therapies can affect the pelvic floor muscles, nerves and organs of the pelvis, leading to changes in bladder control, bowel habits, sexual function, fertility and overall comfort. While these changes are common, they are also treatable, and with the right support, many people regain comfort, control and confidence.

To help cancer survivors better understand these changes and available treatment options, Olivia Shelton, P.T., D.P.T., Cert. D.N., pelvic health physical therapist, will present a free virtual educational program, Reclaiming Your Body: Sexual Health and Pelvic Recovery After Cancer Treatment.

During the presentation, Shelton will explain how the pelvic floor affects bladder, bowel, sexual and core function, and how pelvic floor dysfunction may present as pelvic pressure, pain, urinary or bowel changes, or discomfort during everyday activities. She will also discuss pelvic floor evaluations, the impact of cancer and its treatments on pelvic health and fertility, and evidence-based treatment options designed to reduce pain, improve muscle function, and restore comfort and confidence.

The presentation will be offered virtually on two dates, Monday, August 24, 2026, noon to 1 p.m. or Monday, November 16, 2026, noon to 1 p.m.

The presentation topics include signs and symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, pelvic floor evaluation options and findings, pelvic floor oncology diagnoses and treatments, fertility and oncology treatments, and pelvic floor treatment options.

Shelton has specialized training in pelvic health physical therapy and provides evidence-based care to women, men and children experiencing pelvic floor disorders. She works closely with oncology patients to help them navigate the physical changes that can affect intimacy, body confidence and quality of life following cancer treatment. Shelton practices at the Pardee Cancer Wellness Center on the campus of MyMichigan Medical Center Midland.
