ALPENA – Alpena Public Schools will hold a Safe Routes to School Community Forum this Thursday, May 28th, 2026 from 5pm to 6:30 p.m. in the Alpena High School Wildcat Den.
What is SRTS?
Safe Routes To School (SRTS) initiatives aim to unite neighborhoods, ease traffic congestion and air pollution, and contribute to students’ readiness to learn in school.
Purpose if SRTS
Enable and encourage children,including those with disabilities, to walk, roll and bike to school.
Encourage bicycling and walking to school as a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age
Facilitate planning, development, and implementation of projects/activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic through new sidewalks, bike paths and improved intersections/crossings
Safe Routes to School Grant
The Safe Routes to School Program (SRTS) is a federal Transportation
Alternatives Program funded by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), working with the Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF) and Michigan State University (MSU).
