AAA: Michigan gas prices drop after setting new 2026-high

DEARBORN – Gas prices in Michigan declined after setting a new 2026-high of $4.08 on Wednesday. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $3.98 per gallon for regular unleaded, which is up 11 cents from a week ago. This price is 38 cents more than this time last month and 88 cents more than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $60 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $9 from 2025’s highest price last August.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand decreased from 8.68 million b/d to 8.56 million. Total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 240.9 million barrels to 239.3 million. Gasoline production decreased last week, averaging 9.4 million barrels per day.

At the close of Friday’s formal trading session, WTI fell $1.30 to settle at $96.57 a barrel. The EIA reports crude oil inventories increased by 3.1 million barrels from the previous week. At 464.7 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are about 2% above the five-year average for this time of year.

“Michigan gas prices hit a new 2026-high last week, and while they’ve eased since then, prices at the pump remain elevated,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group.

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price increased slightly. Metro Detroit’s current average is $3.92 per gallon, about 3 cents more than last week’s average and 80 cents more than this same time last year.

The most expensive gas price averages in Michigan is in Benton Harbor where gas is $4.11 a gallon. The least expensive gas price averages is in Flint at $3.88
