Alcona Historical Society events
ALCONA COUNTY – The Alcona Historical Society invites the community to a special program to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Sturgeon Point Life Saving Station, in operation from 1876-1941.
The special guest is author and historian Frederick Stonehouse, who will present “Forgotten Heroes, The U.S. Life-Saving Service on the Great Lakes.”
The men of this remarkable organization displayed incredible courage and bravery in rescuing over 55,000 people from potential death on the Great Lakes.
Despite personal danger or difficulty, the life-savers invariably accomplished the rescue. Their unofficial motto was, “Regulations say we have to go out, they say nothing about coming back.” It was a motto they lived, and in some cases, died by. This free program will be held on May 7 at 6 p.m. at the Alcona Township Hall.
Refreshments will be served after the program.
This “Cabin Fever” program is sponsored by the Alcona Historical Society, the Alcona County Library, and a grant from the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan. For more information, visit alconahistoricalsociety.com or call 989-657-4773.
