Alpena library hosting Mich. White Pine Logging Era

The Alpena County Library Special Collections presents a Facebook Live program at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11: Michigan’s White Pine Logging Era.

Join Alpena County Library’s Special Collections Department and historian Hillary Pine for a look at how 19th-century logging affected Michigan. Learn how Michigan went from the nation’s leading lumber producer to a deforested wasteland and how we replanted millions of acres to shape the Michigan we know today.

Pine is the Northern Lower Peninsula Historian for the Michigan History Center and the DNR. She is responsible for the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum, the Michigan CCC Museum, and the Higgins Lake Nursery. She has worked for a variety of state, federal, and nonprofit organizations, including Mackinac State Historic Parks and the National Park Service. Her BA is in Art History from the University of Michigan and she has an MA in Museum Studies and Cultural Heritage from the University of East Anglia. She especially enjoys sharing Michigan’s diverse history with the public.

This program will be streamed live via Facebook Live. It is free and open to all. No registration required. For more information visit www.alpenalibrary.org or the Library’s Facebook page.
