News collecting books for NIE sale

Courtesy Photo The Alpena News counts on donations of used books, such as these from last year, to make its annual Newspapers in Education Book Sale a success. Donations for the sale, set for Feb. 8, 2020, are currently being accepted at the newspaper office.

It’s that time of year again — the time when books start coming into The Alpena News office.

The newspaper is gearing up for its annual Newspapers in Education Book Sale, and while it doesn’t take place until Feb. 8, 2020, donations of used books are now being accepted.

The nationally recognized NIE program involves The Alpena News supplying many area classrooms with free newspapers that are used for educational purposes. Proceeds from the book sale make operating the NIE program possible.

Locals schools that benefited recently from the NIE program include Lincoln, Ella White, Besser, Wilson and Sanborn Elementary Schools, Alpena High School, Thunder Bay Junior High School, ACES Academy, Hillman High School and Posen High School.

The book sale will take place at the APlex, in tandem with the newspaper’s annual Business Expo. Anyone with donations of books is welcome to drop them by the newspaper office Monday through Friday during regular business hours.

The Alpena News staff appreciates the willingness of its readers to partner with the newspaper to keep the NIE program active and thriving in local schools.
