Some 65 different youth ranging in age from 5 to 19 received accolades for their 4-H project achievements this past year during the recent Alpena County awards banquet. On Sunday, October 20, 4-H staff, council members, leaders and parents thanked their kids for the positive work they do in the Alpena community and the 4-H projects they put so much time and energy into completing.

Many youths were recognized, but the most notable award was given at the end of the banquet. The evening culminated with the announcement of the 2019-2020 4-H’er of the Year, Savannah Avent, daughter of William and Stacie Avent. This is the highest award that can be received at the county level by a 4-H member.

The Dale Huggler family has been the sole sponsor of this award since its inception in 1975. Avent will represent 4-H for Alpena County at various public events throughout the coming year and make public presentations on behalf of the program during that same period. Danielle Hoggard, granddaughter of Dale and Joann Huggler, awarded the title of 4-H’er of the Year to Avent.

Also at the banquet, youth received project pins in categories including arts and crafts, public speaking, animal science, food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, and woodworking. Additional members were recognized for leadership or citizenship project work and for overall achievement throughout the year.

4-H bestowed the Adeline Alexander Memorial Award to A’va Mitchell for her work in home economics project areas. The “I Dare You” leadership award and leadership camp invitation went to Brooke McKenzie. Trent Seelye, Mya Klimczak and Carly Leatzow were recognized as Master Stockman for their overall knowledge of animal science.

Individuals who were also recognized for their 4-H accomplishments that reached beyond Alpena County at the state level included A’va Mitchell, Demi Oliver, and Brooke Gersewski.

In addition to the youth 4-H members, volunteers and staff recognized an outstanding Volunteer of the Year. Dione Oliver was honored at the event for her tireless dedication to the 4-H youth development program.
