Be fully informed before casting your vote

It’s important for people to know the candidates for the APS Board of Education and if they understand that: They must take an oath to support the Constitution. Their votes will be recorded at alpenaschools.com/district/board-of-education/. Voting for the new, arbitrary, and experimental agendas and initiatives of one party only is highly partisan, and resisting them, especially when they are anti-science, is quintessentially nonpartisan. Calling your opponent “political” for resisting your political agenda doesn’t make you nonpartisan. Regarding transgender use of school ...

Support Prop. 3 to restore rights to women

In response to the letter dated Oct 8. 2022, I would like to speak in support of Proposition 3 and dispel misconceptions about the proposal. Proposal 3 (Reproductive Freedom for All) restores the rights that Michigan women had for almost 50 years under Roe v. Wade. A yes vote on Prop. 3 takes us back to June 23, 2022 when Roe was still federal law. The author of the Oct. 8 letter mentions drinking and taking drugs during pregnancy. This is an unfortunate choice, but ultimately not one that can be legislated for an individual. Prop 3 does not impact these personal choices, only ...

Alan Curtis is best choice for Alpena County

A good judge is knowledgeable, practical, compassionate, efficient, patient, thoughtful, creative, curious, well-prepared and, above all else, respectful of both the judicial system and the parties appearing in court. This November, voters will have to choose between two candidates for Alpena County Probate Judge and the best choice is clear. I practiced law with Alan Curtis for just over four years. In that time, I knew him to be a strong advocate for our clients while maintaining unquestioned integrity and credibility. In the year that he’s been on the bench, he has embodied all ...

Consider voting Democratic on November 8

Election Day, Nov. 8, marks a special day for all Americans, as it is the day we all come together to protect our democracy and express our freedom in the form of our vote. The Presque Isle County Democratic Party respectfully asks that you consider voting Democratic this election. The reasons are clear: (1) The assault on our freedom regarding reproductive health. (2) The assault on our freedom regarding our right to vote. (3) The assault on our environment and access to clean air and water. (4) The assault on our Social Security and Medicare, including the ...

It’s time to hold school board accountable

A week ago, Gordon Snow took out a large ad in The Alpena News, Moving Ahead in 2022- Where We Are & Where We Are Going. It listed 26, A-Z steps the Alpena Public Schools, Superintendent, Faculty, Staff, & Board of Education are committed to in the months and years ahead. Mr. Snow certainly should know what it takes to lead our public schools as he has spent his entire career in education and the past 14 years on Alpena’s School Board, often as president. However, being busy doesn’t necessarily translate to accomplishing your fundamental mission. And it could be argued ...

Explaining my decision to skip LWV forum

I decided to skip the recent League of Women Voters forum and wanted to offer an explanation. It came to my attention that the LWV might be unable to provide an unbiased platform to introduce myself and discuss my candidacy. Specifically, this realization occurred in reviewing their frequently updated Facebook page. I was taken aback at how blatantly partisan the page was for an organization that bills itself as nonpartisan. Examples include: April 5, they shared an article titled, “The unique, damaging role Fox News plays in American media”; May 2, they shared a post by the Iosco ...
