Better options for Alpena Township to consider
When I vote no on the Alpena Township fire millage, I am not voting against firefighters. I do believe there are better options to consider concerning this proposal. DICK GENSCHAW, Alpena

As an attorney for 38 years, including 15 years as Alpena County Probate judge, 26th Circuit Family Division judge, and 88th District Court judge (retired from the bench) I have a unique vantage point. With regard to Proposal 3, an amendment to our state’s constitution, an analysis includes studying ‘how we make law’. We make law in at least four ways: 1. Establishing or amending a constitution, 2. Legislative process, 3. Judicial law in the appeals courts, and 4. Administrative or rule making. All law, wherever made, must be constitutional, as our constitution is the highest ...
As a nurse of over 40 years, I am concerned with the language of the proposed constitutional amendment, Proposal 3. I find it very overreaching. When we as professionals treat pregnant women, we treat two patients, not just one. We treat the mother and the child. The proposed amendment allows no interest for the child; the child has no rights, and would be neglected. I am also greatly concerned that informed consent is eliminated, and replaced by “voluntary consent”. Medical professionals have worked diligently for years making sure that patients are informed of the benefits ...
Parents, grandparents, and people of our community. We need a big change in our school board, we spoke and they did not listen — except for Eric’s Lawson and Ned Heath — thank you for taking a stand. The board voted in a clinic to be housed in the Alpena High School. Alcona Health Center said just to be clear, we do not provide provide puberty blockers, gender counseling or abortions, well they don’t now, but laws change. They claim children need this because parents work and can’t make appointments, well let’s enable parents some more! This would be a minority of students ...
I have voted in every election beginning in 1964 — national, state, and local, general, primary, and special. I would have voted in 1960, but 18-year-olds were not enfranchised. That is a lot of voting. The remaining ballots of my life, however, will be far more important than any I have cast. The digital era has empowered demagogues and the willfully ignorant. The Guy on Barstool No. 7 grabs his phone and reaches more people than this newspaper — or the New York Times. Right-wing hucksters rule infotainment broadcasting. As far as the eye can see, we will be voting in ...
Remember when they tried to convince us the slippery slope was a myth? Well, it’s not and Proposal 3 is a grim reminder of the evil and depravity that lies in store for our children if we stand passively by…and make no mistake, it’s much closer than we think. Prop. 3 will allow the brutal slaughter of children in the womb, even up to birth. Prop. 3 will allow any minor to be escorted to an abortion clinic without her parents’ knowledge, which will be extremely accommodating to any rapist hoping to destroy evidence of his actions. Prop. 3 will restrict any parent from ...
