What happened to obeying rules of the road?
Did you know…
Back in 1958 and 1959 I took drivers ed classes where they not only showed us how to operate an automobile, but taught us the rules of the road.
As I drive in the Northeast counties I noticed many infractions made by fellow drivers. I would still believe that most if not all of the laws I learned back in my school days are still in effect, such as: Did you know that when passing a slower moving vehicle you may do so in a safe manner and without exceeding the posted speed limit?
Did you know when making a right hand turn it is unlawful to leave the highway and drive on the shoulder well before you wish to turn?
Did you know that when making a left turn at a red light where a left hand turn lane is provided that you are only to enter the turn lane where there is a break in the white lane line?
I know this is impossible when making a left turn from Long Rapids Road onto southbound Bagley during rush hour. However, that’s a problem for the road commission to resolve. These are only just three infractions that I have noticed through the years. There are many more rules of the road I would like to talk about, but I’ll leave this for now and I do hope that I will read other letters from other well versed drivers. I have also talked with several police officers regarding some infractions not noted in this letter and found that they are not always up to speed regarding the laws that they are responsible to enforce.
This last statement is not meant to be a condemnation of law enforcement officers who have an awful lot on their plates already.
