Know the facts about Plaza Pool and the APlex

A new community pool for Alpena is in the initial planning stages. On the community survey, it asked several specific questions about the pool as well as our other community sport and recreation needs — such as more indoor gyms. Reading through the open-ended comments, it was noted how often erroneous information was commented on by the public. Moving forward as supporters of a new pool, it is important that community members have the correct information to share with others. 1.) The Alpena Plaza Pool is owned by Alpena County but is not funded with general fund taxpayer ...

Medical bracelet great, important program

I really enjoyed the recent article in The Alpena News regarding the Miles for Memories program sponsored by the Senior Center. It is an excellent program but the article did not explain fully the many reasons the program exists. I wear a my/ID bracelet but do NOT have dementia. I’m a senior who wears the bracelet just to be safe. When you get the bracelet, you enter into the online program all information you wish to have known to first responders. Your name, address, and other information, such as any medical issues you have, allergies, medications, etc. Then you can list emergency ...

Congress, you must act on Ukraine aid now

I wonder how many Ukrainians died last night defending themselves against Vladimir Putin’s honde of conscripts, convicts, and mercenaries. How many women were raped and how many children were kidnapped and taken to live in Putin’s vile paradise. But, more than anything, I wonder how long a confederacy of dunces in the American Congress will deny aid (ammunition) to the Ukrainians under the guise of an “America First” policy. The policy is based on the cynical political assumption that Americans are too confused to see that Ukraine’s battle against Russian barbarism is an ...

Swedish flag up at NATO delightful vision

Tomorrow and Monday, Vladimir Putin will be celebrating another tainted victory from another sham presidential election in Russia, and he will be all smiles for the cameras. However, can you just imagine how mad he was when NATO HQ raised the Swedish flag in Brussels last Monday? Not sure how many shades of red there are, but Putin must have used them all in his fit of anger when Sweden joined the alliance. What a delightful vision indeed! MIKE DOTSCH, Alpena

Why does Jack Bergman keep telling lies?

U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman said after President Joe Biden released his $7.3 trillion budget that it cuts essential funding for the new Soo Lock and raises taxes on Americans. This is not true and Jack knows it, so why does he keep telling us lies? Biden’s release of his budget blueprint includes $ 2 billion total for the Army Corps construction projects, including $264.1 million for the work underway to build a replacement lock in the Soo, which Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works Michael L. Connor called a “very high priority project for the ...

Women no longer must have supporting role

When I was a young girl, my mom and I watched movies together with a wide range of those showing women as support to the hero. You know them: Tarzan and Jane, Roy Rogers and Dale Evens, and so on … then came “Xena, Warrior Princess,” “Wonder Woman,” and Princess Leia. But, even then, there were real-life women heroes for girls, young women and old to look up to, to emulate, and to follow in their chosen fields of work. Contributions by women to history are numerous: Cleopatra, pharaoh of Egypt; Joan of Arc, martyr and military leader; Sacagawea, a Lemhi Shoshone indigenous ...
