PREP ROUNDUP: Fourth quarter surge helps Alpena top Trojans
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Alpena 47, TC Central 42
ALPENA–Avery Dubey scored 14 points and the Wildcats scored 21 fourth quarter points to pull out a win against the Trojans in a Big North Conference contest on Monday. Alpena (4-9, 2-7 BNC) led 26-25 after three quarters and outscored Central 21-17 in the final eight minutes. Jessica Leeck added nine points for Alpena, Allie DeRocher had eight and Reese Wisniewski had six.
Alpena’s JV team lost 57-46. Maddie Linton had 10 points for Alpena and Olivia Precord had seven.
Posen 76, Hale 42
HALE–Makayla Kamyszek scored a career-high 27 points and the Vikings (9-1, 9-0 North Star League) used a 22-8 run in the second quarter to pull away from the Eagles. Ella Szatkowski added 18 points for Posen and Faith Cousins had 12. Posen led 37-18 at halftime and 57-37 after three quarters.
Posen hosts Rogers City on Thursday in its final home game of the year.
Alcona 50, Onaway 32
ONAWAY–A balanced scoring attack propelled the Tigers (8-2) to their sixth win in seven games on Monday. Karen Sharboneau led Alcona with 11 points, Liz Henderson had 10 and Rachel Layton and Kelsey Hansen had 8 each. Alcona led 9-2 after one quarter, 23-12 at halftime and 35-26 after three quarters.
The Tigers play at Hillman on Wednesday.
Hillman 61, Rogers City 14
HILLMAN–Nicole Barbeau had 13 points, Julia Taratuta had 12 and Hillman (8-3) turned on the jets in the second half, outscoring the Hurons 43-9 in the second half. Hillman’s win was its fifth in a row.
Hillman hosts Alcona on Wednesday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Gaylord St. Mary 33, Hillman 32
GAYLORD–Despite a good defensive effort, the Tigers (7-5) struggled offensively on Monday. Trenton Taratuta led Hillman with 18 points and Sean Henigan added eight as Hillman only had four players score on the night.
Rogers City plays at Rogers City Tuesday.
Onaway 54, Alcona 50
ONAWAY–Kevin Pearson scored 22 points, Jager Mix added 15 and the two of them scored all but four of Onaway’s points in the forth quarter as the Cardinals (8-3) pulled out a close game. Onaway trailed 14-11 after one quarter, but led 22-20 at halftime and 39-38 after three quarters. Spencer Nash added 11 points for Onaway and was a key contributor on both ends of the floor, according to coach Eddy Szymoniak. DJ Howe led Alcona with 26 points.
Onaway plays at Forest Area on Wednesday.
BOWLING
Alcona competes against Charlton Heston
The Alcona bowling teams competed against Charlton Heston last weekend.
Alcona’s girls team had good competition against Charlton Heston and ended with getting most of the points for the day. High score for a single game was Brielle Keyser with 183, followed by Victoria Skuse with 166. Team game totals were 595/705 with a total of 1,299.
The Alcona boys won their points against Charlton Heston. High score for single game was Brenden Hudgins with 162, followed by Jakob Tanner with 159, and Logan Bates with 155. Team game totals were 705/660 with a total of 1,365.
