PREP ROUNDUP: Ellis competes at state finals

EAST LANSING–Alpena High senior Kennedy Ellis shot a 101 at the Division 2 girls state golf finals Friday at Forest Akers West in East Lansing.

Ellis, who was competing in the state finals for the second time in her high school career, finished 73rd in a field of more than 100 golfers.

Okemos junior Allison Cui won the individual state title after shooting a 70.

FOOTBALL

St. Ignace 21, Rogers City 20

ST. IGNACE–The Rogers City football team came up just short of victory on Friday, as a rally attempt fell short in a 21-20 loss to St. Ignace.

The Hurons (2-3) trailed 21-12 at halftime, but scored midway through the third quarter on a two-yard run by Austin Bielas to make it 21-18.

St. Ignace took a safety on fourth down near the end of the game to give the Hurons their final two points.

The Saints set the tone early, intercepting Rogers City’s first pass on the first play of the game and returning it for a touchdown.

The second quarter was all St. Ignace as the Saints scored midway through the period and then again right before halftime. Fortunately, for the Hurons they got an extra play to end the half and made the most of it was Isaac Hein found Newhouse for a 20-yard touchdown pass.

Rogers City is scheduled to play Manton next week.

Pellston 46, Hillman 26

PELLSTON–The Hillman football team couldn’t keep up with a high-powered Pellston offense on Friday and lost to the Hornets, 46-26.

Pellston scored 20 unanswered points to begin the game and Hillman (2-3) finally got on the board after a fourth down conversion late in the first half.

The Hornets upped their lead to 34-6 after three quarters, but Hillman was able to find the end zone three times in the fourth quarter.

Jeff Klein had 24 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown for Hillman and added two catches for 41 yards; AJ Jones threw for 106 yds and a touchdown and had a one-yard rushing touchdown; Dawson Ableidinger had a 23 yard touchdown catch; Owen Moulten had an 11 yd touchdown run; and Zack Kazyaka led Hillman’s defense with 11 tackles.

Hillman is scheduled to play Gaylord St. Mary next week.

Oscoda 62, Alcona 0

LINCOLN–The Oscoda football team continues to run the table.

Oscoda improved to 5-0 on the season on Friday after a dominating 62-0 win over Alcona.

Through five games, Oscoda has yet to let the opposition score and has outscored opponents 274-0; an average of 54.8 points per game.

Alcona’s defense was led by seniors Chris Barnes and Bill Jones who had seven tackles and five tackles and a fumble recovery respectively. Alcona’s offense was led by Jacob Sytek on the ground and Zach Stephenson and Gavin Walker through the air.

Oscoda is scheduled to play Houghton Lake next week and Alcona is scheduled to play at Roscommon.
