Hurons fall in semis of Sault volleyball tourney

SAULT STE. MARIE–The Rogers City volleyball team opened its 2017 season on the road during a six-team tournament in Sault Ste. Marie last weekend.

The Hurons fared well and ultimately fell in the semifinals to Houghton, 21-25 and 26-28.

In preliminary matches, Rogers City split with Houghton (23-21, 17-21), split with Sault (21-10, 18-21) and defeated Marquette (21-17, 21-13) and Gladstone (21-19, 21-18) to finish second overall.

Jayna Hance had 41 digs for the Hurons and Kayla Rabeau had 40 digs, 21 kills and 11 aces; Taylor Fleming had 34 digs, 30 kills and nine blocks and Kyrsten Altman had seven blocks, seven aces and 45 assists.

Rogers City plays at New Lothrup on Wednesday and will compete in the Alpena Invitational on Thursday.

“I was really happy with the quality of the teams,” Rogers City coach Jackie Quaine said. “They were all bigger UP teams, so it was good competition for us.”
