ALPENA – The Alpena High baseball team (9-4, 0-0 BNC) stayed hot on Monday night after picking up two more wins against Boyne.

While an early-on scare occurred in game one, Alpena still defeated the Ramblers by scores of 15-7 and 12-0.

Out of the last six games, the Wildcats have exited victorious in five and hope to carry that momentum forward into conference play today against Traverse City West.

“We know (today’s) gonna be tough against a great opponent, but we proved (yesterday) that we can hit, and I hope we bring this energy into (today’s) play,” Alpena coach Eric Mackenzie said. “I just told the guys that we know we can beat anybody in our conference and that all starts (today) by playing like we did (last night).”

Brady Chapman began game one by taking the mound for Alpena and only allowed one batter to score after suffering control issues, throwing several wild pitches.

Down 1-0 early, Alpena tied the game right back up in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly hit by Jonny Rensberry.

In the top of the second, Boyne’s offense erupted, scoring six runs on just two hits.

The biggest blow from the inning was a double hit right into the gap, scoring two runners.

During the half-inning, the Wildcats switched through three different pitchers, who all struggled to throw strikes until Owen Kaiser entered the game.

Kaiser helped Alpena escape the jam and didn’t step off the mound for the remainder of the first game.

Although Alpena fell behind 7-1, the Wildcats were relentless and responded with eight runs of their own.

Chapman knocked in an RBI single, Tucker Bright found a single that scored two, Jonny Rensberry singled to score another two, and Caleb McEwen capped off the inning with another single to score a final runner.

An error committed by Boyne also cost the Ramblers another two runs.

Now that the game had already been flipped on its head twice, the Wildcats secured the momentum and discovered a groove in the field.

Kaiser pitched four straight shutout innings while the Wildcats added another six runs to their total.

A two-RBI double crushed by Kaleb Donajkowski and an RBI single from Kaiser highlighted the remainder of the scoring.

Kaiser earned the win after only surrendering one run, leading the Wildcats to a 15-7 victory.

Game two began entirely differently, and all of the credit was due to Alpena’s starting pitcher, Landon Gagnon.

Gagnon went on to throw five scoreless innings, holding a perfect game for the majority of the match.

Offensively, Alpena started immediately with a three-run first inning.

Jake Zann finally found massive success at the plate after demolishing a triple into right field that scored two runners.

McEwen later drove in Zann on an RBI single to take a 3-0 lead.

The bottom of the second inning proved another offensive explosion for the Wildcats.

Bright, Donajkowski, Rensberry, and Jase Kollen all collected RBI singles during the inning.

Zann uncovered another RBI, only this time on a groundout that pushed a runner across the plate.

Three final runs came in the bottom of the third before the mercy rule.

Chapman tripled, while Connor Cameron and Lucas Weir both hit singles to finish the 12-0 win.

“The key to success (yesterday) was our ability to hit the ball,” coach Mackenzie said. “We’ve really come a long way in that aspect, and our problem earlier was leaving runners on base, and we rarely did that (yesterday). We got some great innings out of our younger pitchers, and overall, we just finished strong as a team.”
