Day earns all-state honors at D1 finals

EAST KENTWOOD — Mitchell Day finally did it.

After two years of near misses, the Alpena senior earned all-state honors at the Division 1 state track and field finals on Saturday, finishing second in the 3,200 run with a school record time of 9:08.80.

Fenton’s Dominic Dimambro won the event in 9:07.79. Day had previously finished 10th in the 3,200 run as a sophomore and ninth as a junior.

Day and his teammates Aidan Day, Aden Smith and Josh Smith also had a record-setting day, setting a new school mark in the 3,200 relay with a time of 7:58.40. The quartet had previously broken the record last month at regionals where they finished second in 8:03.93.

Trevor Roznowski took 14th in the discus (144-2) and Alec LeTourneau finished 11th in the pole vault (13-6). Aden Smith was 30th in the 3,200 run (9:54.19) and Faith Weide took 18th in the shot put (35-5 1/2).

At the Division 4 finals in Grand Rapids, seven local athletes earned all-state honors.

Hillman’s Billy Kolcan earned two medals, finishing second in the 300 hurdles (40.96) and sixth in the high jump (6-1). He also finished ninth in the long jump (20-0)

Kolcan’s teammate Brandon Banks finished fourth in the 1,600 run (4:31.82), one spot ahead of Fairview’s Tylor Ross, who finished in 4:32.64. Ross also finished 13th in the 3,200 run (10:12.72).

Fairview’s girls 400 relay team of Sarah Handrich, Mara Krupinski, Tala Barton and Andrea Ford also earned all-state honors after finishing fourth (52.21). Ford also finished 15th in the 200 dash (27.87).

Other local competitors included: Hillman’s Emilee Noffze in the high jump (20th, 4-7); Posen’s Lindsey Randall in the 400 dash (13th, 1:02.94) and Kelsey Jakubcin in the shot put (31-5); Alcona’s Brooke Shultz (11th, 8-9) and Rose Schopfer (NH) in the pole vault and John Sharboneau in the discus (23rd, 122-1); Rogers City’s Emily Malocha in the 1,600 run (14th, 5:40.62) and Luke Augsburger in the high jump (12th, 5-11) and Onaway’s Jaclyn Nash in the discus (18th, 95-10).
