Moir, Juergens shut down Joburg in Tigers sweep

HILLMAN — As if the playing conditions weren’t tough enough to hit in with the wind blowing and rain falling, Hillman pitchers Kyler Moir and Jared Juergens made it almost impossible for Johannesburg-Lewiston to put together any offense on Monday.

Moir twirled a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 Cardinals in game one of a doubleheader and Juergens completed the nightcap with a two-hit shutout, fanning nine batters as the Tigers swept a doubleheader against Joburg by scores of 6-0 and 3-0 on in Hillman.

“These two have been lights out so far,” Hillman coach Rick Firman said. “The conditions were tough today, but Jared’s stuff has been good and Kyler has so much movement on his pitches, both of them have everything working right now.”

The lone hit Moir allowed came in the first inning against the third batter he faced, but that was the only hit the southpaw allowed the rest of the way.

Hillman’s offense again wasted no time putting runs on the board as the Tigers scored in the first inning for the third game in a row.

Andrew Funk drew a walk and later scored on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze off the bat of Caine Hunt after Moir advanced Funk to third on single through the right side of the infield.

“We put a lot of work in to executing the suicide squeeze the best we can,” Firman said. “It’s a staple of Hillman baseball and it’s a great way to produce runs if you can perfect it. It’s something I take a lot of pride in and I know the boys do to.”

Moir retired the side in order in the second inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced and Hillman scored three runs in the home half of the second to take a four run lead.

Kory Henigan led off the bottom of the second with a single and later scored on an error. Nash Steinke reached on the error that scored Henigan and Steinke stole a base and came around to score on an RBI single from Funk. Juergens also came around to score after some heads up baserunning.

The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Moir and Hunt came around to score.

Six runs was more than enough as Moir retired the side in order the next two innings and ended the game striking out the top three hitters in the Cardinals order to end with 10 punch outs, while picking up his second win of the season.

Hillman started off the nightcap the only way it knows how, by scoring one run in the home half of the first inning. Funk put together a great eight-pitch at-bat, drawing a walk, stealing second base and later scoring on a balk.

The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth inning as Henigan and Gage Steinke both came around to score after the Cardinals committed a costly error on an errant pickoff attempt at third base.

The game was shortened by an inning due to weather and field conditions as Juergens pitched all five innings, allowing just two hits that came on back-to-back singles in the third, but worked his way out of a jam and cruised the rest of the way to pick up his second victory of the season.

Hillman improves to 4-0 overall on the year and will open up conference play on Monday when it hosts Mio.
