Onaway, Posen boys both win

ONAWAY–Keaton Brewer recorded a double-double and the Onaway boys basketball team used a fast start to defeat Inland Lakes 68-58 on Wednesday.

Onaway (4-6) led 23-15 after one quarter and pushed its lead out to as many as 16 in the first half. The Cardinals led 33-28 at halftime and 48-41 after three quarters.

“We came out with a lot of energy. We put pressure on them and got a big lead right away,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “Cam Horn did a great job running the point tonight and leading the way for us.”

Brewer had 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win and Cody Cruse added 14 points and five rebounds. Trevor Wregglesworth added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Onaway plays at Central Lake on Friday.

Posen 50, Au Gres 42

Despite trailing for three quarters, the Posen boys basketball team never gave up hope on Wednesday.

Trailing by five points after three quarters, the Vikings shocked Au Gres and outplayed the Wolverines down the stretch to win 50-42.

“Tough defense is what won us the game. Usually when they get down, they’re done,” Posen coach Chris Keller said. “I was happy with the performance and hopefully it gives us some steam heading into homecoming.”

Posen (2-8) trailed 37-32 after three quarters, but outscored the Wolverines 18-5 in the final eight minutes to emerge victorious. Au Gres led 12-7 after one quarter and 26-17 at halftime.

Jared Sharpe led Posen with 15 points and Mark Wisniewski added 15 points and seven rebounds.

“Mark Wisniewski gave us the fire we needed. He and Darren Dubie came out and they just wanted to play,” Keller said.

Dubie, who is 5-9, did a solid job guarding his much taller opponent all night and Wisniewski spurred Posen offensively.

Posen hosts Hale for homecoming on Friday.
