Hillman continues win streak; Posen tops Owls

AU GRES–The Hillman girls basketball continued its winning streak on Monday with a 52-33 win over Au Gres.

Hillman (10-1, 8-0 North Star League) led 17-10 after one quarter and pulled away further in the second quarter with a 12-4 run in the second quarter for a 29-14 lead at halftime.

Hillman outscored 23-19 in the second half.

Vanessa Schook paced Hillman with 13 points and Morgan Armon added 12.

“Our ball movement wasn’t as good tonight, but we were able to put some defensive pressure on the ball,” Hillman coach John Kuzewski said. “Au Gres is a tough place to play and they played us tough tonight.”

Hillman plays at Fairview on Thursday.

Posen 42, Oscoda 33

POSEN — The Posen girls basketball team got an important win on Monday, defeating Oscoda by a final score of 42-33.

After trailing by one after the first quarter, the Vikings took a four point lead heading into the half. Oscoda’s Katelyn Everton scored 16 points in the first half, but was held in check in the second half and was limited to just two points as Posen put together a solid final two quarters.

“We played good defense and took care of the ball. We were able to hold Katelyn in check and that was the key for us tonight. It was a big win for us,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said.

The Vikings were led by Cami LaTulip who poured in a career high 25 points, 19 of which came in the first half. Brooke Ciarkowski added 11 points in the win.

Posen improves to 4-7 overall and 4-4 in league play.

The Vikings will be back in action when they travel to Mio on Thursday.

Mio 33,

Hale 30

HALE — The Mio girls basketball team defeated Hale on Monday by a final score of 33-30.

“Hale played tough defense making it difficult to score,” Mio coach Cindy Thomey said.

The Thunderbolts were led by Emily Mangutz who scored 10 points and had nine rebounds. Jordan Butler added seven points and eight rebounds. Claudia Wilson chipped in with six points and both Lauren Kuffel and Kaley Auten each had seven rebounds apiece.

Mio also earned a victory over Whittemore-Prescott on Friday, winning by a score of 40-35.

Auten led the Thunderbolts with 12 points. Mangutz added 10 points, Kuffel had six and both Wilson and Butler chipped in with five points apiece.

Whittemore-Prescott 69,

Atlanta 23

WHITTEMORE–The Atlanta girls basketball team lost to Whittemore-Prescott on Monday, 69-23.

Tiffany Juergens paced Atlanta with 15 points and Marissa Schmidt paced Whittemore with 13 points.

Whittemore-Prescott 86,

Atlanta 41

WHITTEMORE–The Atlanta boys basketball team got off to a good start on Monday, but couldn’t sustain its effort for long and lost to Whittemore-Prescott 86-41.

Atlanta (2-8, 0-7 North Star League) trailed 18-14 after one quarter, but the Cardinals took control from there, taking a 54-20 lead at halftime and a 63-32 lead after three quarters.

“We just basically got overmatched,” Atlanta coach Kevin Haren said.

Nick Byarski led Atlanta with 14 points and Austin Corbin added 13 points.

Aziayah Bell paced Whittemore with 31 points.

Atlanta plays at Rogers City on Friday.

BOWLING

Alcona tops Cardinals

WEST BRANCH–The Alcona girls bowling team faced Whittemore-Prescott on Saturday in West Branch and won 27-3.

The Tigers swept both Baker games with a total of 269-192. In the team event, the Tigers dominated with a total of 1,230-898. 

High games for the Tigers were Raegen Eller with 154 and the high for the Cardinals was Mackenzie Mackenzie with 152.

The Tigers will take on the Charlton Heston at 11 am, Saturday in West Branch.
