WRESTLING

ITHACA — The Onaway wrestling team took five athletes to Mio for a team competition. The meet was moved to Thursday due to weather.

In the meet with Oscoda, Onaway had three wins as Britney Wolgast (112) won an exciting match with a takedown in overtime. She was leading throughout the match, but an attempt to score late in the match created the tie and sent it to overtime where the first points scored decided the winner.

“Britney created a situation that we have been working on in practice and worked it to perfection putting her opponent on his back and nearly getting the fall,” Onaway coach Mark Grant said. ” It was a great moment for her and we were all very excited for her.”

Teddy Peters (130) overpowered his opponent, Elijah Williams, and pinned him in just 32 seconds.

Matthew Grant was moved to 140 for a bout with Robert Host and he also made short work of the match, securing the fall in 50 seconds.

Coty Ionetz (145) wrestled Anthony Johnson.

“Although Cody lost the match I was very happy with his performance as he put points on the board and dumped him with a great takedown,” Grant said. ” Troy moved back up to 160 and lost a tough bout to Antonio Raona 3-1. Troy wrestled tough and got in on some shots but could not turn them into points.”

Against Mio, Onaway had just two wins with Peters and Grant imposing their dominance over their opponents. Peters used a couple takedowns and a nearfall before actually pinning Triston Antkowiak at the 2:30 mark of the second period. Grant used a couple takedowns, nearfalls, and a reversal on his way to a second period fall at 3:20. Wolgast lost to Cam Demory by fall and Ionetz wrestled a great match against Hunter Eurich, who is a two-time state qualifier and had the match tied going into the final period when a mistake caught him out of position and he was pinned. “Troy was a little off that night as well and ended up straining a muscle that led to him missing the weekend event as well,” Grant said. He dropped his bout 5-3.

Four wrestlers then made the trip down to compete at the Ithaca tournament on Saturday. Wolgast made her debut at 103 and for the first time all year she did not look tiny compared to her opponents. She had a great final win which put her in the semifinals against the number one seed. “She wrestled tough all day and feels great about having done the extremely hard work getting down to a more competitive weight class, she looked good and I look for her to continue improving at this better weight class for her,” Grant said. “At 130 I was able to put in two wrestlers so both Matthew and Teddy competed there. The boys really asserted themselves early with Teddy recording a fall at 1:53 and Matthew winning by technical superiority 15-0. In the semi-final bouts Teddy dropped the match by fall over top-seeded and Division 3 (class C) seventh ranked Desmond Gardner of Portland. Matthew continued with another Tech fall setting up an exciting finals match between him and Gardner.”

In the final match, both boys were on point and after defending a shot Grant scored a quick takedown that led to a mistake on Gardner’s part and Grant made him pay for it by scoring a fall in just 1:19 of the first period.

“It was exciting for sure however what made it even more exciting was watching Teddy rebound from that loss to completely dominate his opponent for third place,” Grant said. Peters met Cole before and after spotting him several points he stormed back to win the bout. This time however was different as Peters went right to work and did not stop until the final whistle, scoring a dominating 12-0 win to secure third.
