Hurons have solid showing at New Lothrop tourney

NEW LOTHROP – The Rogers City volleyball team traveled to New Lothrop for a tournament last Saturday and put together a competitive weekend.

The Hurons were able to defeat Breckenridge 25-16 and 25-17 in their first matchup of the tournament. Rogers City carried the momentum of the game one victory and beat Imlay City 25-11 and 25-13 to stay perfect.

The Hurons were then tripped up by the host New Lothrop as they fell 25-18 and 25-8.

With a 2-1 record in pool play, Rogers City earned a six seed to advance to the gold division with eight other teams which moved to single elimination.

The Hurons fell in the first game to the three seed Birch Run by scores of 25-17 and 25-21.

“Overall I thought we did good. We improved from our previous tournament and we were able to make a few changes and I think if we can continue to improve little by little we will be alright,” Rogers City coach Jackie Quaine said.

The Hurons were led by Kayla Rabeau who had 20 digs, 18 kills and seven aces. Taylor Fleming added 20 kills and 10 blocks. Mary Brege chipped in with 32 digs. Jayna Hance had 27 digs and Hannah Fleming dished out 28 assists.

Rogers City will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Alpena to compete in a quad.
