Looking forward to Northern Strike visit

I read with interest Master Sgt. Jason Kinney’s presentation to the Alpena Township board on the upcoming Northern Strike military exercises. I was disheartened that he felt the need to advise the troops not to wear their military uniform in town as they might “freak out” the locals. In addition, assuring us that they will work hard not to disturb us.

Each year, I look forward to Northern Strike. If I am lucky, I am out at our cabin when the Blackhawks fly in low running the length of Grand Lake. I have always assumed they are purposefully flying over the lake as they come to town. I am proud to think my community is the place troops come to train, that our area provides unique opportunities. I think it is incredible that foreign allied troops come to Alpena to train.

Can you imagine an Estonian airman going back home and explaining he went to Alpena, Mich., to train, and the puzzled response: “Where?”

Master Sargent, you have my permission to disrupt my daily routine, to make noise, conduct raids at our local mall, play war games in our streets and to bomb my house (no live ammunition, please).

For me and everyone I know, the Northern Strike sounds like freedom! Any disruption to my precious little routine is fine.

If I see troops in town, it will be, “Thank you for your service,” “Welcome to Alpena,” and, “Can I fly your A-10?”

BRUCE DUNCAN,

Alpena
