A better way to make choices?

Life is full of choices.

It is estimated that adults make 35,000 remotely conscious decisions each day. According to a PBS.com story, a Cornell University study revealed we make 226.7 daily decisions on food alone.

That makes me exhausted, or maybe hungry.

I should take a nap, but that’s a bad decision, so I’ll power through.

My 13-year-old daughter found a hack for at least a couple of her decisions. She walked out one morning and I said, “nice outfit,” to her. She replied that she didn’t know what to wear, so she consulted the “Picker Wheel” app that she apparently uses often. She puts in a couple of choices, hits the randomizer, and, lo and behold, a set-in-stone decision has been made.

In a world of “paralysis by analysis,” that simple tool helps her get along with her day.

Maybe I should give that technology a spin.

This got me thinking, what should I use it for?

Then my mind started wandering …

∫ Who to pick for president? If you’re like me, you feel like both leading candidates leave a lot to be desired. The randomizer probably beats “eeny, meeny, miny, moe.”

∫ Which Subway, pizza place, or Mexican restaurant I should eat at for lunch. I would need to provide a lot of options for the randomizer.

∫ Whether I should pick mountains, beach, city, or “yes, please” for our next vacation.

∫ Whether I should bring up the number of days since Ohio State beat Michigan in football, or whether I should keep my mouth shut.

∫ Whether I should get Snapchat and Tiktok so I can attempt to remain cool (do kids even say “cool” these days?). Or should I just give up the ghost and lean into middle age?

∫ Related: What should I choose for my midlife crisis? Tattoo? Motorcycle? Boat? Skydiving? Bleached blond hair?

∫ Should I risk popularity by writing about the effectiveness of roundabouts and diverging diamond intersections, or should I remain quiet on such a touchy subject.

∫ Should I open the e-edition or print version of my newspaper (shameless plug!). If you haven’t figured out how to get your e-edition initiated, please give our circulation department a call. It’s great to have the option of opening the edition up at any hour.

In all seriousness, thank you for making reading this column one of your weekly choices. I am thankful for people interested in local news who make us part of their routine.

Oh, would you look at that.

My app is now telling me it is now time to take that nap.

I don’t want to let the technology down.

Zzzzzz.

See you next week.
