Panel Processing this year celebrates 50 years of operations and its growth from a small shop in Alpena to a major manufacturer with operations in four states.

The wood product manufacturer was founded in 1971 by Robert Granum and a small group of local investors. It built itself by building the expanding big-box retailers of the day, including Kmart and Walmart, but today focuses on smaller retailers, custom displays, cabinets, and furniture.

The company has about 197 employees, including about 50 in Alpena, and is 100% owned by the employees.

“We have a history of having long-term employees, and it’s invaluable to have that dedication and knowledge,” President and CEO Eric Smith told reporter Steve Schulwitz for a recent story. “This company is all about its employees.”

A half-century is an important milestone, made even more noteworthy by Panel Processing’s thriving national success and its dedication to employees.
