Man who hung himself in Presque Isle County Jail wasn’t on watch, though roommate says he made suicidal comments

ROGERS CITY — Outhmen Ghanie Khargie, the man who hung himself at the Presque Isle County Jail on March 26, was not under surveillance, despite the fact his cellmate allegedly informed a corrections officer before the suicide that Khargie had talked about killing himself, according to police reports obtained by The News through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Sgt. Bryan McClelland, of the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Office, interviewed Khargie’s cellmate, James Lovell, after Khargie hung himself with a bedsheet, according to the reports.

Lovell told McClelland Khargie was “fine” until an incident with Corrections Officer Brandon Irvin that would have led to additional charges against Khargie. The reports do not mention when the incident with Irvin happened, but Lovell told McClelland that Khargie began making suicidal threats after that incident.

Lovell claimed he informed Corrections Officer George Kuznicki of Khargie’s statements, according to the reports. Lovell said Khargie continued to make suicidal comments, but that Lovell never reported those additional comments.

The reports do not make clear when Khargie started talking about suicide, but there was no additional surveillance on Khargie at the time of his suicide.

Presque Isle County Sheriff Joseph Brewbaker could not be reached for comment.

The report makes no mention of past suicide attempts. However, Khargie’s family earlier told The News that Khargie had attempted to take his own life at the jail two times before his most recent and final attempt.

The deceased inmate’s family identified him as Outhmen Joe Ghanie, but he is identified as Outhmen Ghanie Khargie in the police reports.

According to the reports, another inmate banging on a cell door alerted jail staff to Khargie’s suicide at 2:31 a.m. March 26.

When offices removed his body from its hanging position, he had no pulse. Officers performed CPR until his pulse returned.

He was taken to the hospital in Alpena, where he was on life support until he was taken off of life support and pronounced dead on April 5.

Ghanie was at the jail after being charged with one count of third-degree home invasion and two counts of breaking and entering on Sept. 7.

That case was ongoing in Presque Isle County’s 53rd Circuit Court.
