ALPENA — After previously dropping back-to-back games against Grand Rapids Community College on Friday, the Alpena Community College Lumberjacks (6-23, 3-11 MCCAA) geared back up to finish the series on Saturday.

Ultimately, ACC again fell short in both games on Saturday, as the Raiders completed the four-game clean sweep over the Lumberjacks.

GRCC took home game one with a narrow 5-4 victory, followed by an offensive explosion to finish off a 10-0 mercy in game two.

“We played two really close games this weekend, and this is a team we knew we’d have to play our best against if we wanted a chance to beat them,” ACC coach Rob Enslen said. “Grand Rapids is an incredible program, but we have to play better as a team in order to come away with some of these games.”

While the result didn’t favor the Lumberjacks, ACC got on the board first in game one.

Brett Moroschan knocked an RBI single, scoring one, and in the same inning, Anthony Filippis made a play at the plate where he stole home.

Up 2-0 after the first inning, Trevin Lanning and the Raiders answered back after a fielder’s choice resulted in two runs crossing home.

Now tied at two all, GRCC finally broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Aaron Bess blasted a home run into deep right field, and Joey Hysell singled to score another run in the same inning.

ACC was down two runs heading into the top of the seventh inning, but it managed to tie the game back up at 4-4.

A single from Mitchell Walters proved key, and the game was knotted up in no time.

While the Lumberjacks regained the momentum late, Chad Fisher had other plans in extra innings.

Fisher singled with the bases loaded, and, with plenty of time, GRCC passed the plate to complete the 5-4 walkoff win.

Game two began quite differently and was nearly over after the first inning.

ACC surrendered six runs before even recording three outs.

Dylan Nguyen started the RBI party after he doubled, scoring two runners.

Ty Sandwick then stepped up to the dish and singled to score another.

Still struggling to get out of the inning, Aaron Guitar allowed another RBI single and an RBI after a fielder’s choice.

Austin Gates capped off the inning with a third RBI single.

The Lumberjacks entered a deep deficit that would be nearly impossible to overcome, but the team stepped up and fought back as long as possible.

Down 6-0, ACC only granted GRCC one more run in the second inning, yet it came after a batter was walked with the bases loaded.

Gates and Sandwick added additional singles to their already incredible games, leaving just one run separating the game from a mercy rule.

That final run came on a sacrifice fly to score the tenth and final runner.

Guitar went home with the loss in game two after only going two-thirds of the first inning.

“It’s obviously super tough to come back from a hole we put ourselves in, but that’s just baseball, and we have to be better. We’re always looking to improve and steal the momentum early, but when that doesn’t happen, we have to bounce back and play harder,” Coach Enslen said.

ACC travels to Grace Christian University today.
