Last week, the Alpena County Board of Commissioners voted to support the Alpena County Fair Board’s plan to host a fireworks show on the final night of the fair in honor of the 150th anniversary of the fair.

The Fair Board approached the commissioners for support because a permit to host the show needed to be approved by the Alpena Municipal Council. The plan sparked concerns from some residents in Alpena about the impact the fireworks would have on pets and the wildlife in the surrounding area.

The Fair Board said all of the livestock at the fair will be moved out of the fairgrounds early to accommodate them and biodegradable fireworks used to limit the impact on the environment.
