Names of township candidates released later today

ALPENA — Later this afternoon, voters who live in townships in Northeast Michigan will learn who will appear on the ballot for the August primary election.

Many of the township trustees, supervisors, clerks, and treasurers are up for reelection and will face off against challengers from their political party, with the winner moving on to the November general election to face a candidate from an opposing party.

Many candidates could run unopposed if nobody files to run against them.

The deadline for candidates to file was Tuesday, but township clerks have until 4 p.m. today to forward their lists of candidates to the county.

County-level races in Alpena, Alcona, Presque Isle, and Montmorency counties have already been announced in The News.

The next key deadline for the August election is May 14, when ballot proposal language is due.

The primary election is Aug. 6.
